2025 MATCH REPORT 22/4: Sunset a bit too early

Gerries versus Sunset at Coaver on 22 April 2025 (18/18)

Sunset 158-0  Gerries 113-5 Lost by 45 runs

Gerries resumed midweek cricket with the usual curtain raiser against our old adversaries, Sunset.   Sunset are a decent side and our prospects were not helped when Jonah lost the toss and Sunset decided to bat in good conditions with the prospect of declining light conditions in the latter stages of the game.

Our attack was weakened with the withdrawal of JP and in his absence, Sunset made an aggressive start. The ball went in the air but never to a fielder and Sunset advanced the score rapidly.  Jonah rotated his bowlers but the breakthrough never came and Sunset closed on 158 without loss and with four batters retiring having reached the crs of 25.  We need not dwell on the bowling figures but it is just worth just mentioning that Gordon bowled a creditable opening spell of 4 overs for 24 runs against two very aggressive players.

By the time we came to bat, the skies had darkened and the temperatures plummeted. It was clearly going to be a tough ask to get close to the Sunset total. Kiwi went cheaply but there was a good stand between Guesty and Jim before the latter was stumped having made 18 after he missed a heave into the legside and could not regain his ground in time.

Guesty progressed to the crs and there then followed an excellent knock of 29 from AB including 3 6’s which very briefly gave us just a brief glimmer of hope.  However, by now the light was very bad and while Jonah did his average no harm by remaining unbeaten with 9 at the end, Andrew Grant and Dom Baker (the Dominator) peering into the darkness probably never saw the balls that got them out.

Deadly was out twice (don’t ask!!) in the final over as the rain started to fall and we finished on 113-5.  The scorer and match reporter had by this time retired to the warmth of the bar area suffering from a touch of frostbite.

We look forward to better things (including warmer temperatures) in the games to come.
