2025 MATCH REPORT 11/05: Be our Guesty!

Chulmleigh CC v Coaver Gerries CC, at Chulmleigh, 11 May 2025

Gerries 176/5, Chulmleigh 152/all out. Gerries won by 5 wickets

Chumleigh is one of my favourite grounds, fantastic views, good tea and a quirky village pub. We set off from Exeter and there a number of the team were pessimistic about getting the game in at all with all the wet weather. On arrival at the ground the pitch was wet and the outfield slow.

Surprising his team mates the Skipper of the Day chose to bat first and Krish and Guesty set about their task, Krish smashed a very quick 17 before getting bowled.

Jim came in at 3 and hit an enormous 6 as he looked to be positive, unfortunately while attempting to recreate that shot it hit the toe end of the bat and he was well caught at slip for 8.

In strode James Evans and was batting well with Guesty taking the score to 88 with a fantastic 50 partnership until he ran himself out looking for the extra run.

The Skipper sent in Skins at number 5 after his promising innings against the Dartanians. He batted with poise, skill and flair as he hit his highest score for the Gerries with 38 not out. Him and Guesty pit on 80 for the 4th wicket.

Guesty had batted brilliantly on a tricky pitch with a stoic knock but always ahead of the run rate. He scores 65 before miscuing a cut straight to their fielder. Jonah came into bat with a couple of balls left scoring 2 before being bowled by a grubber.

We posted a very competitive 176, the Chairman was delighted and set about demolishing the tea.

Chumleigh would have to score at 5 an over but we had Clewlow and the Dominator up our sleeves. Clewlow bowled a fantastic spell and was unlucky to only take 1 wicket, but Chumleigh had fallen behind the run rate. The Dominator bowled his longest spell and took a very valuable wicket. It was then the turn of Krish and Evans to try and get the wicket of the dangerous Shapland. Guesty thought he had him stumped and caught behind, but his teammates were being kind. James was unlucky to be wicketless in his 7 overs and Krishy finally got Shapland caught behind for 46. That was the wicket we wanted.

Chumleigh needed 6 an over with 6 wickets and 6 overs remaining, a great run out from Guesty and we needed 5 wickets.

On came Smith and Jones as our death bowlers, Jonah got hit for 5 no balls off his first ball but bowled a tight line and had his first victim stumped by Guest. Smith and his partner in crime Jones took 5 wickets for 18 as we bowled at Chumleigh for 152. Pressure, what pressure!

A great team performance with all team members contributing to a famous win. After his 65 Guesty got a run out, 2 stumpings and a catch.

Thanks to everyone that scored and umpired.
