MATCH REPORT: 4/6 Gilo, Gilo, its off to five we go!

Gerries versus Tale Millers at Tale 04 June 2024

Millers 135-6  Gerries 130-6 LOST by 5 runs (20:20)

An excellent game ended with another narrow defeat but the result was in doubt right up to the last couple of balls.

The weather forecast gave no hint of the drizzly overcast and rather cold conditions in which the game was played but after recent disappointments it was good to get a game in.

Millers elected to bat accompanied by some the extremely loud bleating of their supporters (200 sheep) from the nearby farmyard no doubt bent on upsetting our bowlers’ concentration.  The distraction worked as we served up some inaccurate stuff and were duly punished by the early Millers batsmen who certainly know their ground and batted well, punishing full tosses and short balls over mid-wicket and straight driving balls of fuller length.

Indeed, the first 4 batsmen reached the compulsory retirement score of 25 and it looked like we would go through the entire innings without taking a wicket.  Enter Captain Gilo in the 18th over, far too late of course we all cried, and in twelve balls took 5 wickets for 8 runs assisted by a stumping from Guesty but otherwise not relying on fielders!  A not very happy captain’s son also fell to a run out after a misunderstanding with his father and Millers closed on 135-6, a good but not unbeatable score.

Looking for a fast start, Gilo opened up with Lights and Krish but both went relatively cheaply and it was left to Jonah and Guesty to push the score along. Jonah was out for 20 to a ball that kept very low and Guesty retired on 28 having reached the compulsory retirement score.  Beano and Kyson kept the momentum going but Beano was bowled for 20 and Kyson run out for 24 going for a tight second run.

With four overs to go a victory looked possible but we were unable to keep the momentum going and fell 5 runs short. Still a creditable performance and we certainly enjoyed the excellent lasagne and salad provided by our hosts after the game.
