Teas, breeze and illict cheese

We left Exeter basking in sunshine and full of optimism after our good start to the season.

The Toss

AB won the toss and elected to bat first believing/hoping the pitch would get more unpredictable as the day went on and so on a blustery afternoon our opening pair of Skins and Lobb strode out to bat.

Unfortunately Dan played around a straight one and departed quickly with the Earl replacing him. In swashbuckling style he hit his first ball for 4 and wasn’t going to hang around scoring 10 off the rest of the over. Skins was looking confident and the pair put on 20 in just 3 overs when Skins was bowled by the steady Pannett with a ball that pitched and kept lower than ankle height.

The Earl was out very quickly afterwards caught trying to hit the ball out of the ground.

Krish and JP put on a useful 30 both looking very comfortable with Krish playing some lovely shots both in attack and defence. Unfortunately a mix up led to Krish being run out after a neat bit of fielding by the bowler.

If ever a Captains innings was needed it was now and cometh the moment cometh the man. AB joined JP and at 52-4 we were in real trouble.

Both these men stuck to the attack initially stoic in defence but putting away the bad ball. JP hit 3 sixes and AB 1 in the partnership of 51 that helped us recover to 103 for 5. JP got the thinnest of edges through to their keeper and sportingly walked.

AB continued to lead from the front putting on 20 runs with Gilo until he was out caught by a very good catch. Gilo and Baker scored a few while the luckless Chairman, Clewlow and Musannif could only muster 1 run between them.

Would 135 be enough to defend? We needed early wickets particularly the very dangerous Bushell.

The second innings

AB opened the bowling with Gilo and the Chairman who despite creating a number of chances didn’t get much luck.

Krish gave us hope with the wicket of Campling and AB finally got Bushell for 53 pinning him in front LBW. The skipper used JP, Dom, Simon and Ian but we had no further success and Chumleigh were the deserved winners after just 25 overs, too many extras and full tosses not helping our cause.

Special thanks

Thanks to Dan Lobb who kept wicket for us doing a fine job in his first ever match as a keeper.
Thanks also to our travelling scorer Mrs JP for getting incredibly cold feet and for scoring the whole game.
Great to see lots of famlilies in attendance, including our Chairman’s , and lifetime members Nick and Frances

[ED- thanks to the Chairman also for the excellent match report!]

Player of the day

AB was our Man of the Match and so we went to the pub and bought illicit cheese, a story for later.
